Strategies/steps in answering the listening section on TOEFL test

Concentrate with listening section, structure, writing and reading. Not too focused to learn vocabulary. Learn some new vocabulary can become a useless thing, because sometime it not show on the test. It probably happen, because vocabulary system in English are too big and there’re a thousands word that has probably show on the test. Its better to practice listening and reading because as much as we practice listening, our skill will be good, like listening some English song or watch some HBO movie with or without subtitles.
Practice listening with listen some news or weather report in English on TV or Radio, documentary film and watch some English education on air, it will help us to improve our listening skill. We can join some English club or conversation club or we can join with some people who use American English, because TOEFL is the test that use American English, not British English.

Listening section that use some dialogue (Listening Part B)
  1. read the choice on paper test before we’re listening the dialogue thet not begin yet. It will help us to understand the dialogue.
  2. focuse with the first line of the dialogue. In the first line from the dialogue, it probably the main idea, subject or topics from the dialogue, because it will be asked in different listening section.
  3. when our ears hear the dialogue, in the same times our eyes must see that answer choice on paper test and try to choose a correct answer.
  4. if we not sure with the answer, we must try to guess it. Never make a blank answer, it must be answered. Wrong answer can’t decrease our score, because in TOEFL test, just the right answer will be counted.
  5. if there’re more times after answer the question, read it again for next question. Time interval for every question, its about 8-12 seconds, so use the residue time  for read the answer that we choose.

Listening section that use short dialogue (Listening Part A)
1.       when we hear that short dialogue, we just focuse with the second people or the second line from that dialogue. Sometimes, we can find the answer for that short dialogue in the second line or the second people from that dialogue.
2.       remember. Repeated sentence from the second line on the dialogue it probably the keyword for the right answer. So, watch out for the repeated sentence.
3.       remember for the structure and the expression :
    • restatemerits (Pengulangan Kalimat)
    • negatives sentences (Kalimat Negatives)

    • expressions of agreement (Ekpresi tentang persetujuan)
  1. the question usually begin from the easiest to the more difficult.
  2. if we not sure with the answer, we must try to guess it. Never make a blank answer, it must be answered. Wrong answer can’t decrease our score, because in TOEFL test, just the right answer will be counted.
  3. even we don’t understand with the question, we can answer it.
    • if we just understand some word from the dialogue on the second line/second people, choose the repeated sentences.
    • If we’re really don’t understand with the dialogue on the second line/second people, choose the answer that has a different/freak sentence when we hear it.
    • Don’t choose the answer that has a same sentence with the expression in the dialogue on the second line.
